Galen Weston CEO of Loblaw and wanna be TV star stirred up a controversy when he gave a keynote speech at the Canadian Food Summit, stating that "Farmers' markets are great . . . One day they're going to kill some people though." Mr. Weston is well ahead of the curve because the antibiotic resistant chicken his company sells probably already has killed someone.
Not realizing that his statement would be scrutinized so closely, the Loblaw PR machine went to work, "We understand that the comments concerned or offended some and we regret this outcome," Julija Hunter, vice-president of public relations said. Hunter continues, "Galen firmly supports farmers' markets and their growing role in the Canadian food system. He was at a conference speaking about the ways to strengthen the participation of small growers and producers in that system. He does not believe nor did he imply that farmers market are less safe than any other forms of food distribution, including grocery stores."
Except that was exactly what Weston meant, nice try PR people. Mr Weston of course, refused to comment or be interviewed, which is consistent with other controversies involving his company.
