In late October 2011 however, it was decided that all records would be purged as well. If the gun registry was such a waste of money as the conservatives claim, why would they want to purge all of the data surrounding it? At the very least the data could be studied as how to better control the costs of future government programs.
Quebec is trying to stop this from happening, however, this is a contrast and controversy that Harper welcomes: Canada vs. Quebec and rural vs. urban. This is how The Conservative Party achieved their majority with less then 40% of the popular vote last May. With a propensity to ram bills through parliament "expeditiously", one has to wonder why the debate has been going on for so long. It is almost as though Stephen Harper and team want the controversy to linger, since it serves them so well.
During the election campaign Harper stuck to his guns, repeating that money from the gun registry should be used to fight real criminals not hunters and farmers. I can't think why any Hunter or Farmer would require a C15 long range sniper weapon.
