Remember on February 8 2012 when Galen Weston exclaimed that farmer's markets will kill people? Turns out that Weston's supermarket chain beat the farmers to the punch. On March 13 2012, Health Canada issued a health hazard alert for NO NAME, read Weston's brand, of beef burgers and steaketts. Farmer's markets may not kill people after all but E. Coli from Loblaws' products most certainly will.
| Product | Size | UPC | Lot Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| no name 12 Beef Burgers | 1.36 kg | 0 60383 37333 7 | BB 2012 AL 22 EST 761 |
| no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes | 2.27 kg | 0 60383 01321 9 | BB 2012 AL 22 EST 761 |
Don't take our word for it here is an excerpt from Health Canada's advisory,
"Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die."This isn't the first time a no name meat product has been recalled for E. Coli, hell, it's not even the first time this year.
Galen might fancy himself an expert on food safety and TV food judging but his company's track record speaks for itself. It might be time to consider visiting the local butcher shop instead of the freezer isle at one of Galen's fine establishments.
